Above, Tara in action on a recent visit to a high school in California.

Tara’s main talk, which is tied to The Battle of Darcy Lane, suitable for ages 8-12, goes like this:

Tara talks about her path to becoming a writer, sharing stories and early writing, like poems and snippets of short stories that she wrote when she was a child. Highlighting how there are may ways to be a professional writer, Tara discusses various writing jobs she had before becoming a novelist (music journalist, stand-up comic, book jacket writer, and more).

Then, Tara reveals how the story of The Battle of Darcy Lane came from her own experience with mean girls when she was twelve—and then talks a little bit about how writers shape stories out of their own lives. If the room allows it, Tara will call upon volunteers to help demonstrate some of the moves of the game of Russia, featured in the novel. Lastly, she shares some lessons she learned while writing the book, things that she wish she had known when she was twelve. Namely, that people are like books. You’re not going to like every book you read or every person you meet…and that’s okay!

Tara is also available to meet with book clubs or writing classes. Skype is also an option! Let’s talk about your needs! Email:
